If you missed the Introduction to the series which provides some background information, you can read it here.
In the process of researching the local history of the previously enslaved, I have discovered more information than I truly thought possible. That is indeed a positive outcome, but given limited time and resources the best I can do at this point is leave a path of crumbs for the next local historian/researcher to please continue this important work.
My goal is to document as many sources as possible and list every slave name I find. I am also providing pro bono research services to any family that believes they are connected to any of the amazing, resilient souls once held in bondage in our region.
Say their names. This has become my personal meditation and purpose.
This will be a short post but an important one from 1805:
Know all men by these presents that I Shadrick Twopence, Mariner in the State of Virginia, in consideration of the natural love and affection which I ? for my son Ralph a male slave, born in slavery, and purchased ? of Isaac Quarles esqr. Have and do by these presents emancipate & free the said boy Ralph & do discharge & acquit him henceforth from all servitude. In witness whereof I have hereunto set my seal and hand this 24th day of June 1805.
I can only imagine . . . and my heart breaks as I do. Whatever parenting challenge you have faced, one has not been having to purchase your own son in order to emancipate him.
Say their names.
Ralph Twopence (Quarles)
